Joe Moran, The Body

It has become increasingly important for me to be involved in performances with artists.

In working with the choreographer and dancer Joe Moran I discovered how his approach to somatics was influenced by Deborah Hay. In attending to the body I can interrogate my movement with the frame ‘what if my whole body is my teacher?’

The piece The Body was performed at Nottingham Contemporary as an ongoing installation or sculpture operating in the gallery space. Audience members punctuated the movement, but the dance acted as an occupant holding the space. As a performer I was given a provocation; a ‘what if?’… ‘what if a consciousness could exist in more than one body’.

Joe Moran has since presented a discussion around places to dance, looking particularly at the gallery context. He has raised questions for me around the connections between museum spaces and pedagogy (or existing interpretation frameworks) and the temporal space of the gallery, that enable a visitor to edit their own experience that are exciting for my practice.
